New Filament Isn't Dry Filament

New filament isn’t dry filament.

  1. Making filament involves pulling hot filament through water baths
  2. Most manufacturers don’t bother to heat their filament to remove absorbed moisture before packaging
  3. The clear plastic bags filament comes in aren’t moisture-proof
  4. The desiccant in the bag is there to make sure it absorbs the moisture that comes through the plastic, so you don’t get condensation in the bag. it’s not for the filament.
  5. If it comes in a metallic bag, it might be dried
  6. The metallic bags block water vapor much better than clear ones

The idea that “brand new filament” is dry enough to prevent issues while printing is simply a misunderstanding.
